Founded in July 1963, Beijing Association for Science and Technology 
(BAST), formerly as Beijing Branch of All-China Union of Special Societies 
of Natural Science and Beijing Branch of All China Associations for Science 
and Technology Popularization, currently has 142 societies, associations 
and institutes, 18 county (or district)-level Associations for Science and 
Technology (AST's), 174 AST's of enterprises and public institutions and 9 
AST's of universities and colleges, with more than 400 thousand members, of 
which scientists and engineers are the mainstream.  Advancing with the age 
and developing with creations, BAST is, in the latest 40 years, making 
massive efforts, by playing a role of bridge and link, on booming academic 
communications, popularizing science and technology, promoting the 
integration of economy and science and technology, and building the Home of 
Scientific and Technological Staff.  Especially, the activities such as 
Science and Technology Weeks, Academic Months, Golden Bridge Projects and 
Quarterly Seminars for Scientific and Technological Experts, which have 
certain influence both on capital science and technology circle and the 
public.  BAST has played an important role in implementing the strategy 
of rejuvenating the nation by science and education and the strategy of 
sustainable development, and has worked effectively for the capital's 
economic construction, scientific and technological progress and social 
development.
